Personal Care Services FAQs

What is the difference between personal care and nursing care?

Personal care involves non-clinical assistance with daily activities like showering, dressing, grooming, and toileting, provided by trained support workers. Nursing care involves clinical tasks like wound management, medication administration, and medical procedures, provided by registered nurses. If you need help with medical/clinical needs, our community nursing service is appropriate. For daily living assistance, personal care is suitable.

Can I request a specific gender for my personal care worker?

Yes, absolutely. We understand that personal care is intimate, and you have the right to feel comfortable. We can match you with male or female care workers based on your preference. Simply let us know your preference during the initial consultation, and we'll ensure your care team respects this requirement.

How is my privacy maintained during personal care?

Privacy and dignity are paramount. Our care workers are trained to maintain privacy by closing doors and curtains, only exposing areas of the body necessary for the specific task, using towels or clothing to maintain modesty, asking permission before touching or assisting, respecting your personal space and boundaries, and never discussing your personal care with others without your consent.

Can the same care worker come each time?

Yes, we strive for consistency by assigning a regular care worker to your schedule whenever possible. This helps build trust, ensures the care worker understands your preferences and routines, and provides continuity of care. We also assign backup workers who are familiar with your care plan for times when your regular worker is unavailable.

What if I only need help with some personal care tasks, not all?

That's completely fine! Personal care support is individualized. Some participants only need assistance with showering but can manage other tasks independently. Others might need comprehensive support. During your assessment, we'll discuss exactly which tasks you need help with and create a care plan that provides support only where needed, promoting maximum independence.

How long do personal care visits typically last?

Visit duration varies based on your needs and what tasks are included. A basic shower assist might be 30-45 minutes, while comprehensive morning care (showering, grooming, dressing, breakfast preparation) might be 1-2 hours. We'll discuss your requirements and schedule appropriate visit lengths that don't feel rushed and allow proper care.

Is personal care covered by the NDIS?

Yes, personal care support is funded under Assistance with Daily Personal Activities in the Core Supports budget of your NDIS plan. If this is included in your plan, you can use these funds for our personal care services. If you're unsure about your plan, our coordinators can review it with you and explain your available funding.

What happens if I'm not comfortable with my assigned care worker?

Your comfort is essential. If at any time you feel uncomfortable with your care worker, please let us know immediately. We can arrange a different care worker without any questions or judgment. It's important that you have a trusting relationship with the person providing your personal care, and we fully support changes when needed.

Can personal care workers help with continence management?

Yes, our care workers can assist with continence care, including helping with toileting, providing reminders for bathroom visits, assisting with continence products (pads, adult diapers), and maintaining dignity during continence care. For complex continence needs requiring clinical intervention, our registered nurses can provide specialized continence management as part of community nursing services.

Do I need to provide personal care products and equipment?

Generally, yes. Participants typically provide their own personal care items (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, razors, skincare products, etc.), so we can use products that suit your skin type and preferences. If you have specialized equipment (shower chair, hoist, etc.), NDIS funding may cover these through Assistive Technology supports. Our care workers bring standard PPE (gloves) and follow infection control protocols.
