Domestic Support Services FAQs
What's the difference between domestic assistance and domestic cleaning?
Domestic assistance (funded under Core Supports) is a broader service that includes cleaning plus meal preparation, laundry, shopping assistance, and skill-building, provided by support workers. Domestic cleaning (often under Capital Supports for SDA) focuses specifically on house cleaning tasks. Domestic assistance is person-centered and can include supported participation, while domestic cleaning is a direct service. We can help determine which of your plan funds.
How often can I have domestic assistance?
Frequency depends on your needs and NDIS plan budget. Common arrangements include weekly cleaning and household tasks, fortnightly comprehensive cleaning with some weekly tasks like meal prep, daily meal preparation support, or flexible scheduling for specific tasks. We work within your plan budget to create a schedule that keeps your home maintained without exhausting your funding too quickly.
Can domestic assistants help with gardening?
Yes! Basic garden maintenance like mowing, weeding, and tidying, is typically included in domestic assistance. We also offer specialized garden maintenance services for more extensive work. If your plan includes funding for household tasks, garden care can be part of your service schedule.
What if I want to learn to do some tasks myself?
That's great! Building your skills aligns with NDIS goals around independence. Our assistants can work alongside you, demonstrating techniques, breaking tasks into manageable steps, providing support while you learn, gradually reducing assistance as you gain confidence, and celebrating your progress. This active support approach is a key part of our service.
Do I need to be home during domestic assistance?
It depends on your needs and preferences. Some participants prefer to be home and involved, while others are comfortable with assistants working independently. If you won't be home, we ensure proper key management and security procedures are in place, and you receive updates on work completed. We'll discuss what works best for you.
Can assistants help with meal planning and grocery shopping?
Yes! Meal preparation support often includes meal planning based on your dietary needs and preferences, creating shopping lists, accompanying you shopping or shopping on your behalf, putting away groceries, and teaching meal planning and budgeting skills. This comprehensive approach helps ensure you have nutritious food prepared and available.
What happens if something breaks during cleaning?
While our assistants are careful and trained in safe household practices, accidents can occasionally happen. We have insurance coverage and clear incident reporting procedures. If something is damaged, the assistant will report it immediately, we'll assess the situation, and our insurance can cover accidental damage. Your belongings are treated with respect and care.
Can I request that specific cleaning products be used?
Absolutely. If you have allergies, sensitivities, environmental preferences, or simply prefer certain products, we're happy to use what you provide or purchase specific products for your home. Just let us know your preferences during the initial assessment.
Is domestic assistance only for cleaning, or can it include organizing?
Domestic assistance can definitely include organizing and decluttering! Many participants benefit from help sorting belongings, organizing storage spaces, creating systems for paperwork and household items, and maintaining organization. This is especially valuable for participants with cognitive disabilities or those who become overwhelmed by clutter. Organizing supports safety and independence in your home.
How is domestic assistance different from hiring a cleaner privately?
NDIS domestic assistance differs in several ways: it's funded by your NDIS plan (you don't pay out of pocket), providers must meet NDIS quality and safety standards, workers have disability support training and NDIS Worker Screening, service can include skill-building and supported participation, not just task completion, and it's tailored to your disability-related needs. Standard cleaners provide cleaning services but don't have disability support expertise or NDIS compliance requirements.
