NDIS Support Coordination FAQs

What's the difference between support coordination and plan management?

Plan management is a financial service that pays your invoices and manages NDIS payments on your behalf. Support coordination is a capacity-building service that helps you implement your plan, find providers, coordinate supports, and achieve goals. You can have one, both, or neither—they serve different purposes. Many participants benefit from having both services working together.

How much does support coordination cost?

If support coordination is included in your NDIS plan under Capacity Building Supports, it's funded by the NDIS—you don't pay out-of-pocket. The NDIA determines the funding amount based on your needs. Support coordinators charge an hourly rate set by the NDIS pricing arrangements. We work within your allocated budget to provide maximum value.

Can I choose my own support coordinator?

Yes! Choice and control are fundamental NDIS principles. If you have support coordination funding in your plan, you can choose which provider delivers this service. You can change coordinators if you're not satisfied. We encourage you to interview potential coordinators, ask questions about their approach and experience, and select someone you feel comfortable working with.

How often will I meet with my support coordinator?

Frequency varies based on your needs and the complexity of support. Initially, you might meet weekly or fortnightly as we set up services and get your plan implemented. As things stabilize, meetings might become monthly or even quarterly for check-ins and monitoring. You can always request additional contact if issues arise. We're flexible and responsive to your changing needs.

Can a support coordinator help me get more NDIS funding?

Support coordinators help you use your current plan effectively and can assist with plan reviews when your plan period is ending. While we can't guarantee increased funding, we help prepare strong evidence for reviews by documenting your progress, unmet needs, changes in circumstances, and goal achievements. We can attend review meetings, help you articulate your needs, and ensure the NDIA understands your support requirements.

What if I don't have support coordination in my current plan?

If support coordination wasn't included in your initial plan but you're finding it difficult to implement your supports, you can request a plan review with the NDIA. Explain the challenges you're facing and why you need coordination support. The NDIA may approve a plan variation to add support coordination funding. Alternatively, wait until your regular plan review and request it for your next plan period.

Can a support coordinator help with complaints about other providers?

Yes, addressing service quality issues is part of support coordination. We can help you raise concerns with providers directly, facilitate resolution conversations, support you in filing formal complaints with providers or the NDIS Commission, help you find alternative providers if needed, and document issues for plan reviews. We advocate for you while also empowering you to self-advocate.

Will my support coordinator make decisions for me?

No. Support coordination is about building your capacity to make informed decisions yourself. We provide information, options, and recommendations, but you maintain choice and control. We respect your autonomy while offering guidance. Our role is to support your decision-making, not make decisions for you. If you have a decision-making support person or guardian, we work collaboratively within that arrangement.
